The COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on the healthcare industry – both patients and caregivers alike. The challenges imposed by the virus created numerous bottlenecks in appropriate delivery of quality care.
Shifting the focus to the vulnerable part of the population—those with terminal illnesses—the need for personalized care arises, thus highlighting the importance of hospice care.
Hospice care focuses on comfort and quality of life for patients and their families. It can help with pain management, emotional support, spiritual guidance, medical information, and access to other services like counseling after death.
Hospice offers many services that can make patients’ lives easier in addition to giving family members peace of mind when they know someone has provided care to their loved ones.
This edition, Most Trusted Hospice Care Providers in 2023, brings the spotlight on such care providers who ceaselessly strive to deliver exceptional services to those in dire need.
Featuring on the cover of this edition is New Vision Hospice & Palliative Care.

Care & Compassion When You Need It MostInessa Shapiro is the CEO of New Vision Hospice & Palliative Care in Calabasas, California. She first became interested in elderly patient care at a young age but was inspired to establish her own hospice service while witnessing the quality of her great-grandmother’s end-of-life care.
At two different hospice agencies, her great-grandmother was treated with minimal compassion by care teams more interested in their employer’s bottom line than providing quality end-of-life care for their own patients.
Drawing on decades of business experience, Inessa resolved to establish her own hospice and palliative care agency staffed by compassionate professionals focused on providing 5-star service.
While the COVID-19 pandemic created barriers for providing hospice and palliative care, Inessa is proud to lead the New Vision Hospice and Palliative Care team in providing quality service & care for all of their patients.
As excerpts from her own professional journey, Inessa shares a few words of wisdom for those aspiring to venture into the hospice care niche: “Be extremely organized, ask for help when you need it, give yourself time to learn, be an active listener, build relationships with your colleagues.”
We Will Not Rest Until We Have Given Our BestWe asked Inessa about the challenges she and her team faced during the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, to which she said, “Inadequate supplies of personal protective equipment, changes in hospice services, and decreased access by hospice personnel to patients in long-term care facilities were the major challenges. Flow of patients through hospice care settings was also impeded. Agencies experienced changes in workforce availability and increased emotional support needs of staff. Patient and families experienced increased bereavement needs.”
A Hopeful TomorrowSharing her vision for New Vision Hospice & Palliative Care’s future endeavors, Inessa states, “Telehealth will be a cornerstone of future health care policy following the COVID-19 pandemic, with Medicare Advantage plans as one engine for growth. Expansion of telehealth services across the health care continuum accelerated rapidly due to efforts to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus. These developments will likely shape health care for years to come including for hospice and palliative care providers.”
