World of Warcraft is a game that has somehow managed to stand the test of time for nearly two decades, continuing to pump out expansions one after the other. It has come a long way from its humble beginnings and is still spearheading the MMORPG genre today.
However, many are not convinced and have been asking the age-old question – is World of Warcraft dead? We’ll answer this question in today’s topic and hopefully dispel any and all doubts you might have about the game’s current trajectory and its future.
@ Blizzard
The simple answer to this question would be a resounding no. The game is still very much alive and thriving. It boasts a healthy player base spread across multiple regions and dozens of servers. In fact, some might argue that it’s in the best state it has ever been with the release of the latest expansion Dragonflight.
This expansion may not have hit the same hype levels of Legion or even Shadowlands, but what it did do is deliver a solid, well-rounded gaming experience that many of the game’s fans have been craving for. It got rid of the borrowed power systems that had been plaguing previous expansions and focused on the basics that made WoW great in the first place. To put it simply, WoW Dragonflight just feels great to play.
But Dragonflight is not the sole reason for WoW’s continued success. There’s a few other things that have kept the game afloat for so many years, and we’ll mention some of them now.
World of Warcraft GraphicsOne of the reasons why World of Warcraft is still one of the best MMORPG games today is the game’s unique graphics. Not only is WoW appealing to a wide audience due to its almost cartoony graphics, but it’s also not intensive on your PC. Low to mid-range PCs can easily handle all that WoW throws at them, thus enabling a low barrier of entry into the game.
However, if you do have a monster PC, you can crank all the options to Ultra and experience some of the best game graphics you’ve seen yet. Long gone are the days of your character looking like they’re walking around in rags. Today’s WoW boasts flashy animations and silky smooth character effects that will help you fully immerse yourself in the rich world of Azeroth.
All of this is a testament to the success of WoW’s unique game engine. Yes, it might be a tad bit old by today’s standards, but make no mistake, it’s still working flawlessly and beating out all the competition out there.
Smooth Character CombatMany who believe that WoW is dying have not fully considered the game’s polished combat systems. This is a pillar of any successful MMORPG and World of Warcraft is the gold standard in this case.
@ Blizzard
The in-game character movement and animations are the bread and butter of WoW. If this aspect was clunky, like it is with many other competitor MMORPGs, WoW would be in serious trouble and would not have lasted as long as it has. This is why it is no World of Warcraft news that Blizzard is ahead of the curve in this regard.
This is especially evident in the game’s PvP scene where your reactions play a big part. Responding to your enemy in a timely manner is crucial and can result in victory or loss. Using that interrupt just at the right moment, popping all your offensive cooldowns and proceeding to delete the enemy feels satisfying in all the right ways. And all of this wouldn’t be possible without WoW’s combat being as fluid as it is.
Rich World of Warcraft LoreStory in games is one of those aspects of game design that often gets neglected and put on the back burner. This, however, is not the case with World of Warcraft.
The story in World of Warcraft is rich and complex, building upon the foundations of the Warcraft RTS games from the past. Legendary characters such as Arthas Menethil or Illidan Stormrage have inspired millions of players to pick up a copy of WoW back in 2004 and never look back.
You first start off as a lowly adventurer just stepping foot into this magnificent new world. And while your journey begins with tackling some murlocs and slaying a few boars, you soon find yourself defending the same world against Legion invasions and fighting off the malicious whispers of the Old Gods from deep below the earth.
The lore in the game is so strong that many choose to play the game only to experience the story or even roleplay as the characters from the game, completely ignoring the real end-game. Similarly, some of the top World of Warcraft streamers such as Nobbel have established massive communities who all share the passion for WoW game lore.
WoW Continues to InnovateWorld of Warcraft continues to evolve and innovate, which is our final reason why the game is still looking in top shape today.
The story keeps moving forward and the classes get regular updates or even complete reworks, much to the delight of the majority of players. Balance tuning and content updates are much more frequent than before, and there are plenty of weekly and monthly events such as the Darkmoon Faire, Timewalking dungeons, the Mage Tower and others.
Recently, Blizzard even introduced the WoW Trading Post, a feature that’s pretty much regarded as WoW’s new Battle Pass. But hold on, don’t let that scare you off. It’s completely free and comes with some fun new activities that award points, which you can then spend on unique costumes each month. It’s like a fun little side game that you can enjoy at your leisure.
@ Blizzard
We hope that we’ve presented a convincing case for all of you asking “is World of Warcraft dead?” and showed some of the game’s positive sides. It’s still an amazing MMORPG worth checking out and it shows no signs of slowing down.
The raids are still as challenging and the content still as fun as ever, but that has always been the case with PvE in World of Warcraft. But we have to be honest here. When it comes to PvP, that aspect of WoW is dying a bit, or at least it may seem so on the surface level. Still, that’s not stopping thousands of players from brawling in the arena and climbing WoW ranks each day.
If you’re on the fence about World of Warcraft, we suggest you give it a shot. Now’s the best time to do it, so don’t miss out on the opportunity.
