After the federal government’s supply of immunisations runs out this autumn, the Biden administration on Thursday unveiled a programme to offer free Covid vaccinations to uninsured Americans through December 2024.
The uninsured can get those free vaccinations, which the government is purchasing at a discount, through pharmacies and 64 state and municipal health departments.
Additionally, as part of the programme, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is expecting vaccine producers will donate vaccines to pharmacies.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, there are between 25 and 30 million uninsured adults in the country as well as other Americans whose insurance won’t cover free Covid products this autumn.
The government now possesses a stock of vaccines that it bought from three suppliers, Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax; these businesses do not sell the doses to healthcare professionals.
The corporations will start selling shots directly to healthcare professionals in the fall, and it is anticipated that the government’s supply will run out.
The Bridge Access Programme was first introduced by the HHS in April, but it was not made clear until Thursday when the programme would stop offering free vaccinations to those without insurance.
The programme shows a significant shift in how the Covid-19 pandemic is being felt globally. Governments have relaxed strict health regulations including masking and social segregation requirements as Covid instances and deaths have fallen to new lows, and vaccination rates for the disease have slowed to a crawl over the past year.
The global Covid public health emergency was deemed to be over earlier this year by the World Health Organisation. The HHS claimed that the emergency in the US had ended in May.
