When we think about a car's engine, we might imagine parts like pistons and valves. These are crucial for making the engine work. But there's something even more important: the timing belt. This special belt helps the pistons and valves move together in harmony. It tells the valves when to open and the pistons when to move up and down inside the engine.
The Consequences of Neglecting Your Timing Belt
Understanding this is really important because, over time, the timing belt can wear out. If it's not replaced, it could suddenly break and cause serious damage to the engine. If this happens, you'll need a tow; fixing the engine could cost thousands of dollars.
Following Recommended Maintenance Schedules
Car makers suggest when to do maintenance tasks like changing the oil or flushing the brake fluid. The timing belt is no different. Most of the time, it needs to be changed at around 90,000 or 105,000 miles. If you're unsure, you can look in your car's manual or ask us. We're here to help. Unfortunately, timing belts don't give any warning signs before they break. They just break, leaving you stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.
The Critical Difference in Engine Designs
Here's where things can get expensive: Your engine might be designed in one of two ways. In some engines, there's enough space between the parts inside to prevent damage if the timing belt fails. These are called free-running or free-wheeling engines. But about 70% of cars have interference engines. In these, there's no space between the pistons and valves. If the timing belt breaks, the pistons and valves won't move at the right times. They can collide and cause serious damage.
Potential Damages from a Broken Timing Belt
Imagine the valves opening at the same time the pistons are at the top of the cylinder. This could lead to bent valves or even a broken piston. Sometimes, we only know the full extent of the damage once we take apart the top of the engine.
Weighing the Costs: Maintenance vs. Repairs
You might be thinking about the cost as you read this. While replacing the timing belt usually costs a few hundred dollars, it's a small price compared to the expense and trouble of a broken timing belt. So, it's a good idea to plan ahead for this maintenance. And if you have any questions or need advice, just talk to us. Empire Service Center here to help!
Note: Although most cars today use a timing belt made of strong rubber that can withstand high temperatures, some engines still use a timing chain. Unlike belts, chains are much stronger and usually don't need to be replaced.
You can rely on Empire Service Center if you need a timing belt replacement, a transmission fluid flush, or any other auto repair in London, Ontario. We're here to help you keep your car running smoothly and safely. Don't wait until it's too late – address these warning signs promptly to avoid more extensive and costly repairs.
