Salmon fishing in the Scottish Highlands is an experience like no other, offering the thrill of the chase against the backdrop of stunning natural beauty. If you're planning a trip to the renowned salmon rivers of Scotland, such as the River Ness, Beauly, Conon or the River Spey, equipping yourself with the right tackle can make all the difference. Double-Handed Rods: For larger rivers like the Ness or the Spey, a 12-15 foot double-handed (Spey) rod is ideal. Modern rods are lighter and stronger, often made from high-modulus graphite, providing excellent casting distance and accuracy. Consider a switch rod for smaller rivers like Alness or upriver beats.

Single-Handed Rods: If you’re fishing smaller rivers or prefer a more hands-on approach, a 9-11 foot single-handed rod is perfect. Look for models that are versatile and can handle both floating and sinking lines.

2. Reels

Large Arbor Reels: These reels offer a quicker retrieval rate, which is essential when battling strong salmon. Modern large arbor reels are constructed from anodized aluminum, ensuring durability and resistance to the harsh elements. There are some beautiful reels on the market but few will catch you more fish.

Disc Drag Systems: A smooth, powerful drag system is crucial. Modern disc drag systems provide consistent pressure and can handle the powerful runs of a large salmon without jerking or sticking.

3. Lines

Spey Lines: For double-handed rods, Spey lines are a must. Modern Spey lines come as integrated shooting heads that allow for easier casting, even in windy conditions. Look for multi-tip systems that let you quickly change from floating to sinking tips. It is quite rare to need fast sinking lines or tips in the Highlands.

Running Lines: When using shooting heads, a good running/shooting line is necessary. Modern running lines are made from slick, durable materials that minimize friction and increase casting distance.

Sink Tips and Polyleaders: Carry a selection of sink tips or polyleaders in various sink rates to adapt to different water depths and current speeds. These are essential for getting your fly in front of the fish. 5 foot versions are handiest and the fast sink will serve you well even on your floating line and tip.

4. Flies

Tube Flies: Modern tube flies are popular for their versatility and durability. They can be used with single or double hooks, and the tube design ensures that the hook can be replaced if damaged. Many of our rivers no longer allow trebles so be aware of local rules. Small hairwing doubles can be deadly in low water even down to 14 or 16 in extreme cases. Keep Sunray Shadow in your box and fish it fast and square. A goldhead Copper Frances is one of my favourits on a bright day in clear summer conditions.

Classic Patterns: Traditional patterns like the Ally’s Shrimp, Willie Gunn, and the Cascade still produce excellent results. Modern versions of these flies often incorporate synthetic materials that enhance their durability and visibility. There are many variants too but I’d be happy to fish a Silver Stoat most of the time.

5. Accessories

Wading Gear: Invest in high-quality breathable waders and boots. Modern waders are made from lightweight, breathable fabrics that keep you dry and comfortable. Look for boots with good ankle support and studded soles for better traction.
