At the foot of The mountain Uhud, in the midst, are the cemeteries of Hamza (R.A), Abdullah bin Jasht (R.A), and Mus'ab bin Umair (R.A), who lost their lives in the Battle of Uhud. The remaining Uhud martyrs are also cremated there behind them.
Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib was indeed an Arab soldier and is one of the best huntsmen. He had slain several of the Quraysh noblemen in the battle of Badr and then rushed through their lines like a great wave. One of the Qurayshi noblemen used to have a black slave named Wahshi from Abyssinia (present-day Ethiopia) who was an expert with the javelin. Hind, Abu Sufyan's wife, pledged Wahshi freedom, and his owner Jubayr bin Mut'im assured him the same thing because Hazrat Hamza (R.A) killed his uncle in Badr. Wahshi darted amongst these warriors till he came across Hamza (R.A). He says, “I held my spear and balanced it well, then I aimed it. It entered into his abdomen and went out the other side. I waited until he was dead, then I took my spear and went to wait in the camp. I had no quarrel with anyone. I killed him only to be set free.” Wahshi afterward converted to Islam and assassinated Musailimah, the impostor who proclaimed Prophethood after the Prophet Muhammad’s (S.A.W) death.
When the stream of battle went against the Quraysh, the Quraysh women, headed by Hind, whose brother, uncle, and loved ones had already been murdered in Badr, started mutilating the deceased Muslims. She focused her rage on Hamza's body, ripping his ears and nose, tearing a split in his chest, and extracting his liver, biting it while being unable to devour it. When the Prophet (S.A.W) discovered the body of his dearest uncle, he was deeply saddened. Decades later, when Makkah was lying at his feet, he freely pardoned all of its people, even Hind. Hind afterward converted to Islam.
Mus'ab (R.A) was holding the Islamic flag. When the Muslims started scattering in bewilderment after their defeat, he kept the flag and stayed like a rock at his station. With his other hand, he immediately seized the flag. The rival then slashed his other hand as well. He kept holding the flag to his chest with his wounded arms. At last, the opponent penetrated his body with an arrow. He died and fell along with the flag which he protected when he was alive. Some other Muslim dashed forward and grabbed the flag. He only had a single sheet to conceal his body when he was buried.
In a hadith narrated by Khabbab bin Al-Art:
We migrated in the company of Allah's Messenger (S.A.W), seeking Allah's Pleasure. So our reward became due and sure with Allah. Some of us have been dead without enjoying anything of their rewards (here), and one of them was Mus'ab bin 'Umar who was martyred on the day of the battle of Uhud and did not leave anything except a Namira (i.e. a sheet in which he was shrouded). If we covered his head with it, his feet became naked, and if we covered his feet with it, his head became naked. So the Prophet (S.A.W) said to us, "Cover his head with it and put some Idhkhir (i.e. a kind of grass) over his feet or throw Idhkhir over his feet." But some amongst us have got the fruits of their labor ripened, and they are collecting them. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4047)
The Prophet (S.A.W) ordered that the martyrs be buried while still drenched in blood and in the state in which they had fallen. Two to three of the martyrs were interred together in one grave.
In another Hadith, Jabir said God’s messenger had each pair of those killed at Uhud wrapped in a single garment and asked which of them knew more of the Qur’an. When one of them was pointed out to him, he had him put first in the side of the grave, and he said, “I shall be a witness to these men on the day of resurrection.” He ordered that they should be buried without the marks of the blood being removed; he did not pray over them, and they were not washed. (Mishkat al-Masabih 1665)
The Prophet (S.A.W) sometimes went to see the cemeteries of the Uhud martyrs, and it is, therefore, Sunnah to do so as well. Consequently, no new or non-Muslim activities, that include supplicating to the martyrs, tossing letters or money into the graves, or binding of strings or Tawaf, shall be practiced. Muslims can also visit this place to rejuvenate the history of Islam in front of their eyes. This place is located in Madinah and you can find it conveniently during Ziyarats.
