My sinuses are affected by temperature changes if I travel to colder regions like Santa Fe and then return to my hometown. It is possible that I will develop a cold or worse. If the situation becomes so serious that I need to visit my primary care provider, I won't be playing around. I want to feel better as quickly as possible. All of us have felt that way at one time or another when it comes to our health.
It takes a lot of courage and determination for certain patients to seek treatment for adults who have ADHD symptoms. I treat ADHD patients who struggle with problems such as trouble paying attention, forgetting important items or items, and talking too much. My patients' issues have led to some of them being put on a performance improvement plan at work. My patients have even lost jobs due to the ADHD symptoms. Your relationship may have been strained by the stress and exhaustion your spouse feels while juggling work or family obligations. When my patients come to Upper Valley Behavioral Health to seek help, it's no surprise that they want to know what time their ADHD medication begins to work.
Most people hope that Adult ADHD medication starts working as soon as possible. Many people have been dealing with their issues for years, and they hope that their symptoms will be relieved soon.
The type of medication prescribed will determine the speed at which ADHD medications can start to work.
Adult ADHD can either be treated with stimulant or nonstimulant medications. Adderall, Vyvanse and Concerta are stimulant drugs. Strattera, Intuniv and other non-stimulant medications are not.
Adults with ADHD are treated effectively by stimulant drugs such as Vyvanse and Adderall. Researchers are constantly improving their understanding of how stimulants work in the brain. Dopamine and Norepinephrine are the neurotransmitters that cause ADHD's impulsiveness. Current research indicates that stimulants may increase neurotransmitters' availability and/or make them more efficient in the brain. If stimulant drugs are able to help the brain use norepinephrine and dopamine more effectively, patients will feel more focused as well as less agitated.
Stimulant drugs can only work when they are in the patient's body, and start working right after the first dose. Many of my patients report feeling calmer and more focused the first time they use Concerta Vyvanse, or Adderall.
When deciding whether a drug will work for you, you should also consider the side effects. If they are significant, there is the possibility that the medication could be misused. Side effects of stimulants can include headaches, insomnia, and an increase in blood pressure or heart rate.
Patients who have a history with addiction may end up taking stimulants used to treat ADHD. Stimulants with a longer-lasting release are more likely to be misused.
Strattera and Intuniv, both of which are non-stimulants that can be prescribed to adults with ADHD, are available. Strattera works by affecting the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Intuniv works in a similar way, but they are different. Strattera or Intuniv can take up to 8 weeks to reach their full effect in both cases.
Intuniv or Strattera are drugs that can be misused. This can be helpful for those who have struggled with substance abuse and addiction. Intuniv can cause irritability and fatigue, as well as gastrointestinal upset and reduced blood-pressure. Strattera can cause sleep disturbances, GI upsets and decreased sexual desire.
Adult ADHD is commonly treated with these medications. The medications treat ADHD symptoms from the first day of treatment. It is a great option for those who need immediate relief. Patients who cannot take stimulants due to an allergy, are not helped by stimulants, or have a risk of taking stimulant medication or an alternative to stimulant-free ADHD medications might be best for them. It is important that behavioral health professionals inform their patients that it will take a few weeks for the medication to be effective.
To determine if non-stimulant or stimulant drugs are the best way to treat your ADHD, it is important to speak with a mental healthcare professional who specializes in treating adults with ADHD. Your doctor will develop a treatment plan after discussing your medical history, social background, your current symptoms and your future goals.
