As we close the chapter on 2019, it's natural to reflect on the past year. How has it been for you? Did you create memories that will stay with you forever, or was it a year you’d rather forget? For many, it’s a mix of both. While 2019 brought beautiful moments, valuable lessons, and new connections, it also carried its share of challenges, loss, and disappointment. Personally, I’m ready to leave the difficult parts behind and move forward. With the new year upon us, it’s time to embrace fresh starts and focus on what lies ahead.
Change doesn’t have to wait for the new year, but the symbolic fresh start often motivates us to take action. Instead of clinging to unfulfilled resolutions, we should approach change with realistic goals. While I don’t like the term “resolutions,” I do believe in setting intentions or goals to strive toward. After all, a new year brings a renewed sense of energy and possibility.
For me, this includes letting go of negative memories from 2019—literally burning away remnants of things I want to leave behind. Whether it's hospital wristbands or other reminders of past struggles, I plan to symbolically release them. Change can happen anytime, but the new year often gives us that extra push to take action.
One of the biggest challenges many of us face is the relentless pursuit of perfection. Perfectionism is an all-or-nothing mentality where even the slightest misstep can feel like a failure. The truth is, things rarely go as planned. Accepting this reality allows us to focus more on progress rather than obsessing over perfect outcomes. As we move into 2020, it’s time to release this unrealistic standard and embrace the beauty of imperfection.
How many times have you put off a goal, waiting for the "perfect moment" to begin? Whether it’s a career change, a new hobby, or a personal goal, waiting can turn into an endless cycle. There’s always a reason why now isn’t the right time, but if you keep waiting, that ideal moment may never arrive. Instead of stalling, take the leap now. Small steps toward your goal can be more meaningful than waiting for the stars to align perfectly.
Self-doubt is something we all grapple with, sometimes on a daily basis. It holds us back from reaching our full potential, whispering that we’re not good enough. But as author Marianne Williamson said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” As we step into 2020, it’s time to challenge that voice of doubt. Acknowledge your worth and stop letting fear of failure prevent you from achieving your dreams.
Judging others and ourselves is a deeply ingrained habit, but it often causes more harm than good. We tend to measure people, including ourselves, against arbitrary standards, often rooted in our own values. It’s time to stop imposing these judgments on others and, more importantly, ourselves. Let go of harsh self-criticism. By doing so, you’ll find it easier to let go of judging others as well. It’s about recognizing when judgment happens and learning to release it.
As we age, many of us become less concerned with comparing ourselves to others. Still, it’s an easy trap to fall into—thinking that others have it better or are more successful. In reality, the grass isn’t greener on the other side; it’s greener where you water it. Instead of wasting time measuring your life against others, focus on improving your own. Water your own grass, invest in your growth, and focus on what you can control.
Keeping your emotions bottled up can weigh heavily on your mental and emotional well-being. Suppressed feelings don’t disappear—they build up until they eventually spill over in an uncontrollable way. Letting go of bottled-up emotions is crucial for personal growth. Whether it’s talking to a friend, writing in a journal, or seeking professional help, it’s important to express what you feel. In 2020, make it a priority to address your emotions before they overwhelm you.
Not everything that happens is about you. If someone is short with you, rude, or dismissive, don’t immediately assume it’s your fault. People have their own struggles, and their actions often reflect what they’re going through, not anything you’ve done. Learning to let go of taking things personally is a key step in reducing unnecessary stress and anxiety in your life.
Toxic relationships, whether romantic or platonic, can be incredibly destructive. They often create an unhealthy cycle of dependence, leaving you hurt or emotionally drained. Breaking free from toxic relationships is one of the most liberating decisions you can make. It requires commitment, but walking away is essential for your well-being. In the new year, make a conscious effort to distance yourself from negative influences.
Fear of failure is a universal struggle, but it’s something we must let go of to grow. Failing is part of learning and evolving, and it’s okay to stumble along the way. What’s important is that you keep trying and keep moving forward. Every failure is an opportunity to learn something new and improve. As we move into 2020, embrace failure as part of the journey toward success.
In conclusion, 2020 presents an opportunity for a fresh start, a chance to let go of the past and embrace new possibilities. By focusing on personal growth, letting go of judgment, comparison, and toxic influences, and accepting imperfection, we can make this year one of positive transformation.
