Illinois has its new registration rules for grandfathered “assault weapons” (e.g., semi-automatic rifles) and large capacity magazines. Not everyone who has a FOID card may own a gun, though a large majority of those owning guns likely own standard magazines, which would require registration. With 2,415,481 FOID cards and registration starting on October 1st, 2023, so far only 2,060 guns have been registered and 1,125 accessories. Under the law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on January 10, 2023, people only have three months from October 1st to January 1st, 2024 to register these items, so by a sixth of the period has gone by.
